Tribal Outreach

The Historical Society's vision is to make Montana's Museum a place for learning, collaboration, and building relationships from corner-to-corner in Montana.  To turn this vision into a successful reality, it's imperative we have design-phase impressions and input from Montana's tribal communities as the new Montana Heritage Center moves forward.  Details on how to attend these meetings can be found in the Event section of the website.

Topping Out Ceremony

Join us at 1 p.m. at the northeast corner of the Montana Heritage Center job site for a Topping Out Ceremony. It's the culmination of the steel erection portion of the construction, and an important milestone..

Featured guests will include MTHS Director Molly Kruckenberg, Gov. Greg Gianforte, Contractor Erik Sletten, and Dennis and Phyllis Washington, whose foundation donated $25 million for the project.

Often the workers, students, and others connected to the project are given the opportunity to sign the topping out beams to be part of history. Hundreds of students at 15 schools across Montana put their signatures on the beam during the past two weeks because not only are they learning about Montana history in class, they also are living in historic times.

In America, the Topping Out practice includes putting a tree and a flag on the top beam, often hoisted to signal those below that the framing was complete.
