People and Lands of Montana
Montana Heritage Center Presents
The People & Lands of Montana
"A Great Splash of Grandeur"
Enter the Central Commons of the new Montana Heritage Center and all eyes are immediately drawn skyward.
Soaring overhead are four extraordinary works of art depicting the mountains, prairies, and big skies of Montana—"a great splash of grandeur,” as John Steinbeck once wrote.
Walk farther into the museum concourse, and the people of Montana are brought to center stage—a showcase of 200 portraits, featuring both contemporary photos of today’s Montanans and historic portraits from the Montana Historical Society Library and Archives.
This is the vision for the People and Lands of Montana art installation.
Now, we need your help to bring this vision to life.

The Lands of Montana
The four mobile art installations in the Central Commons respectfully acknowledge the original Sovereign Nations of this area, referencing all four cardinal directions, reflecting the use of traditional medicine wheel colors, and highlighting the sacred landscapes and four seasons of Montana. The panoramas that characterize our home state are on full display through photography, breathing life through the mobile display that gently weaves across the ceiling.
“This land never changes, always whole, always the way we want it to be. We always come back to check our senses or to remember dreams.” — Victor A. Charlo, Bitterroot Salish poet
The People of Montana
The 200 portraits in the Heritage Center's second art installation are carefully curated from the Montana Historical Society's Library and Archives and the Montana Department of Commerce's collections. The photographs depict our trades, industries, and outdoor opportunities, powerfully conveying the connection between past and present, land and people.
“My blood, my roots, my soul is in the state of Montana.” – former Sen. Max Baucus
